Your dreams are depending on you to live.

I’ve been doing a lot of introspection lately. Most of you know that I’m a big thinker, I think about everything. So I’ve been thinking a lot lately. If you follow me on Instagram, you probably already know what this post is going to be about. Or maybe the image is giving you a bit of a hint.

What are you doing to give your dream a chance to become reality?

I’ve found in my circle, and definitely within myself, that we have the tendency to talk more about what we want to do, or are going to do, than to actually put our monies where our mouths are. Like, what are you doing to make this thing you’ve been talking about come to pass?

My number one goal in life is to become a Creative Entrepreneur. If you don’t know what that is, it means to use my creative skills, whether that be writing, designing, music, to make a living. And although I’ve put some things in place for that to become a reality, I’ve also been sitting on my laurels thinking because I’m young then “I have time.”

Enk! Wrong answer. Because the truth is, I don’t have time. Time isn’t something that we are promised. And it’s presumptuous of us to think God is obligated to give us a chance to do tomorrow what we could have done today. Life doesn’t work that way, fortunately or unfortunately depends on how you look at it. I’ve decided to look at it as a kick in the butt, to get up and go for after my goals.

So I’ve come up with a 5 step strategy to help myself with achieving my goals, and I thought I’d share it with you.

5 Simple Steps to Achieving Your Goals

1. Outline/Define the Goal

Step 1 for me is definitely outlining or defining what my goal is. Okay, so you want to become an entrepreneur. What does that mean for you? How is that going to look in your future? There are so many avenues that that road can take you down, and it’s important that you identify the road you want to take. Do you want to become an interior designer? Okay, great, we are getting somewhere. The next question to ask yourself is what kind of design do you want to specialize in? Do you want to focus more on office design, home design? Will you be working with modern concepts, contemporary, minimalist? Do some brainstorming and figure out exactly what the goal is, down to the last “T” so you can then be intentional about your next steps. Then set a time frame for achieving that goal and stick to it!

2. Learn as Much as You Possibly Can

The one thing that I’ve seen and have heard a lot about is people stepping out without first doing their due diligence, and then later falling flat. You don’t want to do that. Make it your priority to learn as much as you can about the goal/dream you have. If that’s to save 300,000 in 5 years, then read all the books you can on budgeting. Watch videos, listen to experts, and then learn how to do a budget and apply it to your finances. If you want to start a photography business, or become a best-selling fiction author, study your craft.

Take classes, go to seminars, read books. Do all that you can to learn as much as you can. Sure you can learn along the way. But why spending so much time getting the basics wrong when you can learn the basic and optimize your time to focus on the specifics and how they are going to work for you? 3. Set Small Measureable Goals

In your quest to greatness, it might tempt you to do everything at once. I urge you, resist that temptation. Sometimes the reason we get burned out, or feel like we aren’t making any progress is because the goal we’ve set is too far or high. Now, I’m referring to goals in the short term. Yes, you’ve set your long-term goals, but now it’s time to identify small, measurable steps to get you there. This can be a road map of sorts to take you from one step to the next. By doing this, you allow yourself the opportunity to focus all your attention on smaller tasks, more attainable tasks. Then accomplishing that task serves as motivation to go on to the next task. It’s much easier to track your process that way.

4. Organize Your Thoughts and Processes

If you’re like me, then you probably think you function well in “organized chaos” or that you work better spontaneously. That is a dangerous pitfall. One that trapped me for years and years and ultimately stagnated my growth, and I didn’t even realize it. I used to think I was a great multi-tasker and that I could get lots of things done at once. And that I didn’t need to write anything down because, well, I have an exceptional memory. That flawed thinking habit got debunked after I got married, because my husband is nothing like that. The human brain can’t focus on multiple things at once. Have you ever been trying to work on something and just couldn’t get something else, that’s unrelated to your current tasks, off your mind? Yeah? That used to happen to me all the time. Until I learned to write things done.

Keep a to-do list. Start your mornings off by writing all the tasks you want to accomplish in that day and then work on them one by one. That way you can devote your full attention to one thing at a time. Try it for a month and see how much more you get done in the day. Use journals to help you with this and tick off each item after completing it. You will feel more accomplished and feel motivated for the next day and the next set of tasks.

With that I can probably add the sub-tip, which is to keep your workspace clean. You will function better in a tidy environment where your eyes are not being distracted by things that are out of place.

5. Make Time

If you’re like me, you probably have a full-time job and lots of responsibilities. Whether you’re a working parent, you do volunteer work; you have elderly dependents – whatever it is you might consider yourself busy. But, I’m learning that to get time you have to make time. You are going to have to do some sacrificing. If you spend two hours on Netflix every night before bed, cut that time down to one or even completely out, until you’ve gotten to a more comfortable space in your goal achievement. Do you spend endless hours scrolling through Instagram or Facebook? Or maybe you’re accustomed to going out with your friends every weekend. You are going to have to learn to prioritize things according to importance and sustainability. So give yourself a set amount of screen time and stick to that allowance. Instead of going out 4 nights a month, cut it down to 2 and use that extra time to put in some hard work. Dedicate as much of your free time as possible, that is mentally healthy to achieving your goal.

Again I’ll reiterate, after you’ve made time, set an end date, and stick to it. There’s nothing worse than hearing someone talk about a goal for years and years, and they always seem so busy “working” on it, but there is nothing to show for all that work.
